1. What information is needed to select a gas regulator?

You must have the system pressure that is supplied, the pressure that is needed downstream, the total downstream capacity of the gas using equipment, and the size of the piping where the regulator is to be installed.

    2. Can I use gas regulators indoors?

If the regulator is to be used on combustible gases, and installed indoors, then the vent must be piped outdoors to a location away from combustible sources. Or the regulator must have the ability to limit the amount of gas that can pass through the vent by way of a "vent-limiting" devise, if available.

    3. What if my demands for pressure and capacities change?

Most regulators are adjustable, and have a range of pressures and capacities they can provide. Some models have the option of changing the springs and orifices for even greater rangeability.

    4. Are these regulators used for natural gas only?

Depending on the model, some regulators may perform equally well on other gases and air, but may have to be selected using a "correction factor" based on the specific gravity of the gas.

    5. What if I smell gas around the regulator after installation?

Shut off the gas service immediately. Check all connections and plumbing components carefully. Check for proper selection of all components and pressures of both the supplied and the pressure that is needed.
